Java Jo’z licensees Mike De Rosa & Sara DeRosa opened a drive-through coffee unit March 21 in the old Wal-Mart shopping center parking lot in Spring Lake, NC. The DeRosas hosted a Grand opening ribbon-cutting ceremony May 5.

The 260-square-foot hut offers two drive-through windows and a single walk-up window. Future plans include outdoor seating areas.

Licensees:  Mike De Rosa is retired from the military, and his wife & Sara is serving in the Army. The husband and wife team have been married for four years.

Marketing:  The DeRosa’s are planning to promote through the use of pre-paid, rechargeable gift cards. If a customer puts $25 on a reloadable card, they will make it $30 or give the customer a free large drink. They plan to market the Java Jo’z cards as gift cards as well. 

They also plan community marketing such as sponsoring a local baseball team and hold fund-raising nights for local schools.  They offer 10 percent military, senior, teacher, student and first-responder discounts on select days.

Products and Pricing:  The Java Jo’z location offers hot coffee drinks in a variety of flavors, from traditional cafe lattes, Chai tea lattes and mochas. Prices range from $1.75 to $4, depending on the style of drink and size. Syrup flavors, including vanilla, caramel, raspberry and Irish cream, can be added to drinks for 50 cents. 

Frozen drinks are sold for $3.75 for a medium or $4.25 for a large, and include mochaccino, caramel mochaccino and frozen hot chocolate. 

Smoothie flavors, at the same cost, include strawberry banana, mango breeze, berry delight and strawberry lime-up.

Snack items, such as biscotti ($1.25), cookies ($1) and cinnamon rolls ($1.50), are also available.
